After Litchfield NP we made a little detour off the highway to Douglas Hot Springs. There is a thermal spring there that comes out of the ground at around 60 degrees. It then flows for a few hundred meters and joins a small arm of the river. So here, where the very hot water meets the cool river is a wonderful spot for a swim. you can cool down from the hot sun or move a few meters upstream to the rather warm water. But if you venture too far up stream you'll burn yourself, so caution is required. It was a nice change from Kakadu, Litchfield and Katherine, where all the signs at swimming areas state that there are crocodiles that inhabit these waters, we finally have a sign that says "Caution, water can be very HOT". So from being eaten alive by crocs to cooking yourself in hot water, you can't win in the Northern Territory.
We hired a Canoe in Katherine Gorge for the day. Very peacful morning. It wasn't too hot thankfully and we were on the water, so if you made a comment about being a little warm, there was someone there to give you a friendly splash. There are Fresh water crocs in the Gorge and they bait, trap and remove all the Salt water crocs to make it canoe safe. So if you feel comfortable enough you can swim there, it's said. Not attempted by either of us. But we did get a few meters away from one Freshie, he was about 2m long. AWESOME. (no photo sorry) but it was a good workout for the arms, but a very enjoyable day.
